We are over the moon and so very happy to announce the release of our brand new album “Palena ‘Ole”! It has been YEARS since the group Kapena released a full-length album and we have been working so hard on this CD for over two years. It has been a long time coming but everything happens in its perfect time and we cannot think of a better time to have released this album. Palena ‘Ole is a mixture of old Hawai’i with a modern twist (check out a full description of our track list below). The CD is on sale on iTunes and CD Baby! The complete, hardcopy CD can be purchased online at www.mele.com.
The photo on the cover was taken at a church in Waiahole called Ka Mauna O Oliveta. We feature the momager of the group on this album, Leo DeLima, as well as the rest of the DeLima Ohana for the first time as the new generation of Kapena. Significantly, 30 years ago Kelly and Leo DeLima were married in the church featured in the cover photo.
Track #1: Shells featuring the vocals of Leo DeLima (the mom of the family) was a song she sang in 1980 at Brown Bags To Stardom. Leo is the booking agent and manager for the group Kapena and rarely sings alongside the group so this song was our way of showing of the mama of the group.
Track #2: Nani Wale Haiku and original song by Tiana Kuni and Kapena DeLima features the vocals of the three DeLima kids: Kapena, Kalena and Lilo. It’s the very first recording of just the 3 DeLima kids and it’s an original song written for the DeLima residence in Haiku.
Track #3: When I Come Home an original song by Ken Makuakane features the vocals of Kalena DeLima. This song was written by Ken Makuakane as the sequel to “I Miss You My Hawai’i”. This song will actually have a music video that we will world premiere at the concert at The Hawaii Theatre on Nov 10.
Track #4: Ke Aalii Ku Makani an original song by Kaleo Nacapoy and Kapena DeLima features the vocals of Kalena DeLima. This is an up-tempo, original hula song
Track #5: Kauai Medley features the vocals of Kelly DeLima and Kalena DeLima. This was a really fun song as it features a tune called “Lumaha’i” and a few original compositions for the island of Kaua’i.
Track #6: Ka Poli O Kahaluu an original song my Jaymi-Lee Paoa McElroy and Kapena DeLima eatures the vocals of Kapena DeLima with special guests Ho’okena. We released this original song on the radio yesterday and the live performance music video is now available on youtube and facebook. Ka Poli O Kahalu’u
Track #7: Coquette features the vocals of Lilo DeLima. This song is very special to us—it’s a remake and was taught to Lilo by our grandma Charlene Kuuipo Naipo. The song starts off with a live recording of Lilo and her mama in her grandma’s house in Kahaluu learning this song. Charlene passed away in 2014 and it was nice to commemorate her by doing this song for her.
Track #8: Hokulea Malama Honua was performed and written by Kelly Boy DeLima for the Hokulea’s world-wide voyage.
Track #9: Kuu Lei Lahilahi an original song by Jon Honda and Kapena DeLima features Kelly DeLima on vocals and is an original medium tempo hula song.
Track #10: Pehea La features Kalena DeLima on vocals. It is a song called “How Can It Be” and was partly translated into Hawaiian by Nina Ki and Kahanuola Solatorio.
