If you’ve ever been in Hilo during Merrie Monarch, you know what I mean when I say it is a MAGICAL place! It feels like Christmas in the middle of April in Hilo town. There’s music, hula, Hawaii-made crafts and good food on every corner. Not to mention ~ there is more love and aloha per square foot in that little town than anywhere else in the world. This year, we had the privilege of performing at our VERY FIRST Merrie Monarch festival with Hula Halau Ka Liko Pua O Kalaniakea under the direction of our dear friend Kapua Dalire. We performed on Thursday night for Shayla Makanoe Mie Thompson as she ran for the title of Miss Aloha Hula. She performed an original song off of our brand new CD Palena ‘Ole. The song is titled Ka Poli O Kahalu’u. We were so honored to have our first performance at Merrie Monarch be as a family and featuring an original song off of our brand new album! We came back on Saturday night and performed Nani Hanalei in the group ‘Auana competition. It was such an amazing experience and we are so grateful to have been in that little town during such a magical time of year. Of course, we got a chance to let loose at The Crown Room on Thursday Evening performing some Kapena classic tunes…. “Hilo’s such a rainy old town”… Hoping to be back again soon, Hilo!! We love you!
